How to Make an Iron-On Transfer with the Silhouette Cameo

I love my Silhouette Cameo and was so excited to see it being exhibited for teachers at ISTE 2012! They were sampling how to make the heat transfers, a function that I had not yet tried, so of course I had to document the process to show you how to use it too.

What is the Silhouette Cameo?
The Silhouette CAMEO is an electronic cutting tool. Like a home printer, it plugs into your PC or Mac with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 12ins wide and 10 feet long.

Iron & fabric

You will start by creating a design in the Silhouette Studio Program.  You will want to set the cutting width to the material that you are using.

Set the Width to 12 and the Height to 6.  You will not need a cutting mat, so make sure to choose 'NONE'.

Now in the advanced Settings (click the tab at the bottom of the first page you put the settings in) you will want to choose 'Long Edge First'.

Type in what you want to be printed on your fabric.  It will need to be backwards in order to be right-side-up on your fabric.

Load your Heat Transfer Material

Choose the proper material and adjust your blade

Now go to the CUT icon and it will send the signal to start the cut on your Silhouette Cameo.

Now you will need to remove the excess material with your hook being sure to leave the writing on the clear plastic background.

This is a heat press, but you can use an iron.  You will want to set your design right-side-up on your fabric and cover with your spare fabric and Iron! You will need to press firmly for 60 seconds and then let cool.

Now you have a really cool personalized bag (or what ever fabric item you choose to personalize).

  1. The state of bargain-priced comic printing in 1976 was such that the little thumbnails in the ad were a challenge to make out.Plancha de transfer
